Editorial:
'Swiftboat
Veterans' Should Release Military Records
A disturbing revelation about one of John Kerry's major critics
from the partisan group "Swiftboat Veterans for Truth" leads
us to call for the group's members to publically release their military
records. This is not a call we make lightly. Miltary records
often contain personal information and the press and public should respect
the privacy rights of American veterans. But the Swiftboat Veterans group
has injected itself squarely into this election by running political attack
ads against presidential candidate Kerry, publishing an anti-Kerry book
entitled "Unfit for Command" and barnstorming the media circuit
in an attempt to destroy Kerry's image as a decorated war hero. Now it
appears from military records that one of the group's key members may
have lied about Kerry's service in Vietnam.
States, Consumers Could
Save a Bundle by Importing Canadian Drugs
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich (D) is among
a growing chorus of leaders who recognize that consumers and government
entities could save a bundle of money by importing prescription drugs
from Canada. Blagojevich has released an analysis that shows
his state could save $91 million a year by purchasing prescription medications
north of the border. According to the Congressional Budget Office, legalizing
the importation of drugs from Canada and Europe could cut drug spending
$40 billion over the next decade, including $4.5 billion in savings for
the federal government. The only question is, to what lengths will the
Bush administration – backed by contributors from the pharmaceutical
industry – go to deny health and cost-saving benefits to those who
rely on prescription medication?
Before You Rush Off
Before the Rush Limbaugh discussion turns from the
right-wing broadcaster’s ESPN fiasco to questions about his personal
hypocrisy and alleged drug abuse, we have this to say about the football
dust-up. Limbaugh ran into trouble because he knows embarrassingly
little about football and apparently took the job to advance his right-wing
agenda. It was only a matter of time before those two facts converged
to expose the truth about “El Rushbo.”
California Recall:
What Would Happen If ...
No one is really talking about it. But there is
a strange fascination that some Californians must have toward the prospect
of electing an unqualified, untested weightlifter-turned-Hollywood action
star to run the nation’s largest state. It is the feeling
that draws one inexplicably toward the edge of Niagara Falls or the guardrail
of an elevated bridge. As in, “what would happen if ... I relinquished
my sensibility and did something for no other reason than to see what
might happen?”
Justice Department Must
Investigate White House for Exposing CIA Operative
The Central Intelligence Agency has asked the Justice
Department to investigate allegations that the White House broke federal
laws by revealing the identity of one of its undercover operatives.
The CIA has concluded that the White House leaked the name of the female
operative to a newspaper columnist, in apparent retaliation against the
CIA operative’s husband. Attorney General John Ashcroft must put
his Bush and Republican loyalties aside and immediately order a full-scale
investigation into the CIA’s allegation. If true, it would mean
that one or more White House officials broke federal law, risked national
security, and possibly jeopardized the life of a CIA employee.
Ninth Circuit Decision Will
Not End Controversy
The Ninth Circuit Court's en banc reversal of its original,
three-judge decision to postpone the California recall election
will not end the controversy surrounding punch-card ballots or voter disenfranchisement.
That is why, despite the understandable fatigue that Californians must
now feel toward the recall process, the plaintiffs in the Ninth Circuit
case should have appealed to the United States Supreme Court.
California Recall Appeal
Correctly Decided
Conservative power-grabbers have been quick to criticize
the Ninth Circuit Court’s ruling to delay the California
recall election. They have denounced the ruling (ironically enough) as
a disruption of the democratic process. But an examination of the court’s
opinion shows that it was well-reasoned and legally correct.
U.S. Must Seek Bigger U.N.
Role in Iraq
The bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad,
the near daily attacks on Iraq’s oil and water lines, and the “low
intensity” guerilla campaign that terrorists continue to wage (primarily)
against the American military, all serve as poignant reminders that the
Bush Administration’s go-it-alone strategy for rebuilding Iraq is
faltering. The Administration should recognize its mistake and immediately
seek greater United Nations involvement in the rebuilding process.
Rallying for the Texas
11
Democrats across the country must rally around the 11 Texas
state senators who are holed up in a downtown Marriott in Albuquerque,
New Mexico. If Texas Republicans succeed in crushing minority resistance
against their Congressional redistricting plan, G.O.P. partisans in Washington
may soon be taking their cue from the Lone Star State.
